Meet our providers – Giraldo Kato, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist

Giraldo “Gerry” Kato, MD, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist, has joined Northern Arizona Healthcare’s Medical Oncology clinic in Sedona. Dr. Kato’s expertise and special interests include breast cancer, hematology and general medical oncology. His research interests include new therapies for breast cancer, as well as for gastrointestinal and thoracic malignancies. Dr. Kato is an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast.  

Dr. Kato believes each individual patient should have a specialized treatment plan based on his or her personal battle with cancer because every case is different and challenging in its own way. “I want my patients to know they will be taken care of with the best standard of quality care,” he said. 

Dr. Kato earned his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic and his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He earned his master’s degree in public health from the University of Miami and completed his residency in internal medicine at East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, N.C., where he served as chief resident.    

Dr. Kato is board certified in hematology through The American Society of Hematology and medical oncology through The American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is a Fellow of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University in Wake Forest, N.C.
