Each day, we see colleagues doing amazing things that reflect our Northern Arizona Healthcare Values. Colleagues doing outstanding work are nominated for the L.O.V., or “Living Our Values,” Award. A committee of NAH colleagues from across the system reviews all nominations to select monthly honorees and quarterly champions.
The following L.O.V. honorees distinguished themselves by living NAH Values – Show compassion, Do amazing work, Respect differences, Build community; and Be better together. Thanks and congratulations to each and every one!
Julia Heersche, RN
Value: Show compassion
When Julia was caring for a young man with a terminal diagnosis, she learned that he had recently proposed to his significant other but was worried that he wouldn’t live long enough to marry her. Julia gathered the team and made arrangements for the patient and his fiancée to get married in the Flagstaff Medical Center chapel. Once the plan was made and the date was set, Julia came in to make sure that everything went smoothly and that the patient was monitored throughout the ceremony. Thanks to Julia, this young man and his bride were able to have a special wedding day. Compassionate actions like these are not out of the ordinary for Julia, who always goes above and beyond in any way she can, big or small, to make a difference in her patients’ lives.
Sheena Yellowman, RN
Value: Do amazing work
Sheena Yellowman was at Late for the Train when she noticed an upset woman assisting her husband with a wheelchair. The woman said her husband had had a severe headache for the last two days and she needed to get him to the Emergency Department. Sheena saw that one side of the man’s face was drooping and asked his wife if this was a new symptom. Upon hearing that it was, Sheena called the operator and issued a stroke alert. Sheena took the couple to meet the stroke alert team, and the patient received the care he needed. Sheena’s amazing quick thinking and immediate intervention may have saved this patient’s faculties as well as his life.
