In IBM Watson Health’s™, formerly Truven Health Analytics, April 23 publication, Northern Arizona Healthcare is listed among the nation’s top performing healthcare systems, ranking in the top-performance quintile of 338 healthcare systems in a recent study. NAH has earned this distinction for six years in a row.
NAH is one of only 22 small hospital systems to earn this recognition, and the only one in Arizona. To achieve this, NAH outperformed lower-ranking peers in terms of the following:
- Patient outcomes − including lower mortality and complications rates.
- Patient safety – NAH had fewer occurrences of hospital acquired infections, or HAIs.
- High-quality care − NAH followed accepted care protocols for core measures more closely and had significantly fewer patient safety incidents.
- Lower 30-day mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction heart failure, pneumonia, COPD and stroke patients.
- Lower 30-day readmissions for patients with acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pneumonia and total hip/knee arthroplasty.
- Wait times – NAH had dramatically lower emergency department wait times compared to the bottom quintile systems.
- Efficiency − NAH released patients almost one day sooner than the lowest performers.
- A high score on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, or HCAHPS, overall patient rating of care – more than 11 points higher than organizations in the lowest quintile.
