Maternity (Perinatal Services)
Maternity and Family Services offered
at Verde Valley Medical Center include complete care for the new mother
and family. All rooms are private and include seven large and beautiful
birthing rooms offering “one room maternity care.” Amenities in these
rooms create a more homelike atmosphere, including private baths with
whirlpool tubs and oak furniture, while emergency equipment is
immediately available if needed.
The physicians and staff are caring, compassionate and professional.
They are required to attend continuing education to learn current
information and techniques. Many of the nurses are nationally certified
in their specialty including Certified Lactation Consultants and
Certified Childbirth Educators. Maternity services include care for
unusual conditions before the baby is born such as preterm labor, and a
full range of services during the delivery including epidural anesthesia
and cesarean section if necessary.
Before the baby is born, new mothers and families are encouraged to
attend Childbirth Education Classes offered at the hospital. All classes
are taught by registered nurses who work in the department. A
breastfeeding class is encouraged to help mothers make informed
decisions about best infant feeding methods. Pre-registration is
encouraged to discuss birthing plans and make financial arrangements.
While “rooming in” is encouraged for the new mother and baby to become
better acquainted and to allow the family time to learn to care for
their baby, a Nursery is available at all times. Babies who require
continuing care are carefully monitored by qualified registered nurses
with the help of state-of- the-art-equipment.
After the baby arrives, many services are available to support the new
family. These include breastfeeding support services, one-on-one
education about caring for the new baby, newborn hearing screening,
birth certificate and paternity services.
Upon leaving the hospital, families may take advantage of several
programs offered through VVMC:
Healthy Families
This home-based, grant-funded program is
designed to assure healthy growth and development to infants and
toddlers through early intervention by providing parenting
information/education, developmental screening and parent support
groups.
First Steps
This outreach program is offered to all
new families getting their start at VVMC. Through home visits and/or
telephone contacts, our staff offers emotional support, developmental
information and resource/service referrals.
Universal Newborn Hearing
Screening program
All infants are screened for hearing impairment. If a screen identifies
a potential for hearing loss, the parent(s)/guardian(s) are notified and
referred to the Arizona Early Intervention Program and to an audiologist
for comprehensive testing.
