Not just a dog, but a special visitor.

Dog Therapy

Dog therapy
Verde Valley Medical Center recognizes the healing benefits of animals. VVMC's dog therapy program provides not just a dog, but a special visitor. Dog therapy is available to VVMC inpatients.

About the program
The process is very simple. A volunteer knocks on the patient's door and asks if they would like a visit from the therapy dog. If invited in, the dog may sit on a chair, or small dogs may even get on the patient's bed to make petting easier. The owner also visits with the patient and answers any questions about the dog or dog therapy. The volunteer carries a camera with them and patients may have their photo taken with the therapy dog.

Many health benefits
The benefits of pet therapy have been well researched and documented. Our dogs are able to provide a general feeling of well-being, unconditional affection and interaction with those who have difficulty communicating. Visits with a therapy dog can reduce feelings of isolation and touch deprivation. Many patients and staff can benefit from dog therapy.

Our therapy dogs are certified by the Delta Society to be suitable for their special tasks. They have passed physical and behavioral testing for certification. Look for their
special ID tags. The dogs look forward to their hospital visits and receive a great deal of love and affection from "their" patients.

The gift of friendship
You are welcome to participate in or
contribute to this program. Contact Volunteer Services at 639-6550 for more information or special requests. If you know of a dog that would be a good addition to our group please pass the information on to their owner.
