About Our Program

Thank you for choosing the Joint Surgery Center at Flagstaff Medical Center to help restore you to a higher quality of living with your new prosthetic joint.

Annually, more than 500,000 people undergo total joint replacement surgery. Primary candidates are individuals with chronic joint pain from arthritis that interferes with daily activities, walking, exercise, leisure, recreation and work. The surgery aims to relieve pain, restore your independence and return you to work and other daily activities.

At FMC we provide:

  • Total Replacements for Knees, Hips and Shoulders.

  • Revision surgery for previously implanted or worn out knee or hip prosthesis

  • The latest innovations in material and design including Oxinium and ceramics

  • Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement pre-surgery education programs to inform you about your upcoming surgery for dates and times CLICK HERE.

Total hip replacement patients typically recover quickly. Patients will be able to walk the first day after surgery. Generally, patients are able to return to driving in two to four weeks, dancing in four to six weeks and golf in six to 12 weeks.

The Joint Surgery Center has implemented a comprehensive planned course of treatment. We believe that you play a key role in promoting a successful recovery. Our goal is to involve you in your treatment through each step of the program. The new joint surgery center emphasizes the following: a healthy outlook throughout the entire surgical experience. The healthcare team at FMC does not view these patients as sick; rather, they understand the patient has had a procedure to help return them to a more active lifestyle.

The patient’s family member or “coach” is present throughout the stay and helps motivate for a faster recovery. With the new program, patients will be able to share their recovery experience with others who are undergoing the same life event.

Your team includes physicians, physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners, patient care technicians (PCTs), nurses, orthopaedic technicians, and physical and occupational therapists specializing in total joint care. Every detail, from preoperative teaching to postoperative exercising, is considered and reviewed with you. The Joint Care Coordinator will plan your individual treatment program and guide you through it.

The Joint Surgery Center at FMC is unique. It is a dedicated center within the hospital. Patients have their surgery on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday and return home after a three-night stay in the hospital.

To help meet this goal, the Joint Surgery Center is a “clean unit,” meaning that patients who have active infections cannot be on the unit. All team members are trained to do their part in reducing the rate of infection. In addition, all joint surgery patient rooms are private and have been recently renovated.
