Frequently asked questions about CT scans:
Should I have a CT scan if I’m pregnant?
Be sure your healthcare provider knows
that you are pregnant. Together you and your healthcare provider can
decide whether you should have a scan.
Do I have to check into the hospital?
You usually don’t have to be admitted for
a CT scan.
Do CT scans hurt?
No. However, some people may feel anxious
when entering the scanner or may experience some discomfort after being
given a contrast medium.
What is a contrast medium?
Contrast medium is a substance that often
is given by mouth or injection at some point in the CT scan procedure.
It highlights certain areas, making the results more readable. Some
people may experience an allergic reaction. Inform your healthcare
provider if you have any allergies, particularly to iodine. Some may
experience flushing, nausea, headache or a salty taste in the mouth. An
itching sensation or shortness of breath may indicate an allergic
reaction to the medium. You may be told to avoid food or fluids four to
eight hours before the test.
Frequently asked Questions about MRI scans:
Can pregnant women have MRI scans?
Since the long-term effects of MRI are
not fully understood, pregnant women usually are not advised to have MRI
scans. However, MRI may be recommended in certain cases.
How long does a scan take?
The total amount of scanning time ranges
from 20 to 45 minutes.
Can people with metal implants be scanned?
In general, a MRI scan cannot be done if
a person’s body contains:

an implanted electronic device such
as a cardiac pacemaker
-
a metal object that contains iron –
the object may be moved out of place by the magnetic force
