Not just a DOG, but a special FRIEND.
FMC’S CARING CANINES PROGRAM
Flagstaff Medical Center, a Delta
Society Pet Partner Affiliate, is one of several hospitals that provide
animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy. These programs
change people’s lives, including patients, students and even the owners
of the animals. Volunteers and their pets have been shown to
significantly contribute to psychological and physiological well-being
in various populations. FMC’s animal-assisted activity and therapy
programs provide not just a dog, but a special friend.
About the programs
Caring Canines is FMC’s inpatient animal assisted-activity program. The
process is very simple. A volunteer knocks on a patient’s door and asks
if he or she would like a visit with the therapy dog. If invited in, the
dog and owner will enter the room to visit with the patient. The owner answers any questions about the dog or animal-assisted activities.
Patients may request a Caring Canine visit by speaking with their nurse.
The many health benefits of animal assisted activities and therapy
The benefits of animal assisted activities/therapy have been well
researched and documented. Animals are able to provide a general feeling
of well-being, unconditional affection and interaction. The visits with
the therapy dog can reduce feelings of isolation and touch deprivation.
Clinical studies continue to show that animals play a role in reducing
blood pressure and anxiety levels, and can help increase patient and
student motivation.
Can you and your pet make people smile?
Can you make the time to visit patients or students a few times a month?
Then consider getting involved as a Delta Society Pet Partner. Both
people and their pets need special skills and tools to work effectively
with patients and students. Pet Partner registration covers two years
and includes an identification badge, a tag for your pet, primary
liability insurance (one million dollars), and more.
If you think your pet is a gift to share with others, here is how to get
started in becoming a registered Delta Pet Partner team:
1. Go to the Delta Society web site,
www.deltasociety.org, and learn
more about Pet Partners.
2. Contact the FMC Volunteer Services
at 928 773-2193 to find out when Pet
Partner workshops and screenings are being offered.
3. Complete the skills and aptitude screening. This screening will help
you and your pet determine the population group, environment and setting
that you and your pet are comfortable with visiting.
4. To ensure that your pet’s health and well-being are not compromised,
a complete health exam by your pet’s veterinarian is required.
5. Fill out the Delta Pet Partner forms and submit them with a
registration fee.
Once you and your pet are registered by Delta, you can work together to
make people’s lives happier and healthier.
