Heart Center of Northern Arizona - Flagstaff Medical Center

The Cardiology department at Flagstaff Medical Center offers a full array of cardiac diagnostic services, provides testing for inpatient and outpatient procedures and serves patients throughout Northern Arizona. Caring for the patient and family is the primary focus of our department. In addition to our Cardiology department, FMC has a Cardiac/Pulmonary Health & Fitness program, two Cardiac Catheterization Labs and a cardiothoracic surgery program.

Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Program (Open Heart surgery)
The latest addition to services for cardiac patients is open heart surgery. Two state of the art surgical suites are equipped for the care of the cardiothoracic surgery patient. The Flagstaff-based surgeon and other team members are able to offer surgical care for coronary artery and valve disease along with major chest trauma.

The program will provide both traditional on-pump bypass surgery and cutting edge beating heart,
(or off-pump) bypass surgery. The program is developed in collaboration with Southwest Heart and Lung (Phoenix).

Echocardiography
This procedure uses ultrasound waves to investigate and display the action of the heart as it beats. This widely performed test is used to assess and diagnose patients for coronary disease.
• Fetal to adult echodiagnostic procedures
• Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
• Stress echocardiography
• Acuson Sequoia equipment

Electrocardiography
This is a testing method commonly used to determine if the heart has been damaged. Also known as EKG, an electrocardiogram is a graphic record of the heart's electrical impulses.

Stress test
Patients walk on a treadmill to determine if they have cardiovascular disease. Specialty-trained staff perform the procedure with a cardiologist supervising. The stress test can:
• Identify ischemic heart disease
• Evaluate patient with chest pain
• Assess results of therapy
• Aid in developing individual physical fitness programs

Pharmacological stress testing
Patients receive a medication that causes an increase in heart rate without walking on a treadmill. This test is appropriate for patients who:
• Have an amputated limb
• Have difficulty walking
• Have exertional dyspnea (labored or difficult breathing)

Nuclear stress testing
Any form of stress test can be combined with the addition of a nuclear isotope for a more specific test result.
