Volunteering for Northern Arizona Hospice

Things a Family Support Volunteer Might Do

1. Maintain regular contact with the patient and family through visits and by telephone.

2. Provide emotional support by actively listening.

3. Transport the patient and/or family members on occasion.

4. Run errands.

5. Provide respite care for the patient at home during brief absences of the caregiver.

6. Assist with light homemaking chores as needed and when requested.

7. Provided temporary babysitting for the family’s children.

8. Provide information on community resources with the social worker and/or nurse to determine what is appropriate.

9. Assist in problem-solving by listening, reflecting, summarizing, but not by giving advice.

10. Assist the family in bereavement.

Volunteer assistance will vary depending on the needs of the patient and family and the availability of the assigned volunteer. Arrangements are made directly between the family and volunteer rather than through the office. If there are problems or needs that cannot be met by the volunteer, the Volunteer Coordinator should be contacted at the Hospice office.
