Volunteer Training

Our Hospice Volunteer Core Training Program provides a solid foundation for becoming a member of the Northern Arizona Hospice team. The 20-hour series is presented in five, four-hour segments, or ten, two-hour segments. Afterwards, volunteers meet one-on-one with the Volunteer Coordinator for post-training interviews. Additional training and educational opportunities are reviewed and scheduled based on what role the new volunteer would like to have.

“Family Support” Hospice volunteers work directly with patients and their caregivers. Activities are dependent on the needs and capabilities of the patient, as well as the needs of the caregiver. Some patients are looking for someone to visit with, while others request simple meal preparation or help with errands. Frequently, a patient’s caregiver requests a volunteer to stay with their loved one while they take care of errands themselves. In all cases, volunteers act as a good friend, sharing their talents and skills with the most grateful recipients. At this time, we also are recruiting volunteers interested in special events and fundraising activities.

Volunteers are valued members of the Northern Arizona Hospice team. Their insights and experiences are shared at team conferences, and help to improve the patient’s quality of life.

Training Class Topics include:

  • Introduction to Hospice
  • Physical Aspects of the Dying Person
  • Spiritual perspectives
  • Practical and Legal Considerations
  • Communication Basics
  • Grief and Bereavement
  • The Relaxation Response, a tool for everyone
  • Patient Care
  • Infection Control

The Volunteer Training Program is held at least twice a year, and is offered free of charge. In addition to completing the training program, graduates are asked to make a commitment to serve as a hospice volunteer for at least one year.
