Flagstaff anesthesiologist appointed chairman of Arizona Medical Board

July 6, 2009

Douglas D. Lee, M.D., has been reappointed to serve a second five-year term to the Arizona Medical Board by Gov. Jan Brewer, and has been elected by fellow board members to serve as chairman of the board.

Dr. Lee has served on the Arizona Medical Board since being appointed in October 2003 by former Gov. Janet Napolitano. He was elected by fellow board members to serve as vice chairman of the board in 2007 to 2009, and as secretary of the medical board in 2005 and 2006. The medical board is made up of 12 physicians and public members who are tasked with regulating licensed physicians and protecting the public through its regulatory mandate.

“It is a distinct honor to serve on the board,” said Dr. Lee. “The cases before the board usually are difficult and complex. The reward, however, is that I feel I’m giving a voice to the smaller medical communities of Arizona, like Flagstaff, in the regulatory decisions that are made by the medical board.”

Dr. Lee has been an anesthesiologist at FMC since 1985, and also is a member of FMC’s Credentials Committee as well as a board member of The Ambulatory Surgery Center at Flagstaff Medical Center. He is a member of, and former president of, the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Board of Anesthesiologists. Previously, Dr. Lee served as FMC’s Medical Staff president and chairman of Anesthesia.

Dr. Lee graduated from the University of Arizona School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. From 1980 to 1981, Dr. Lee served as general medical officer in the Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan. As a reservist, he was called to serve in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm’s 1st Marine Division from 1990 to 1991.
